BANS ON CIGARETTES BY STATE (just to name a few)

NEW YORK:
The city is considering an ordinance banning smoking in public parks and outside city-owned recreational facilities. The City Council is hosting a public hearing May 27 on the measure. Planning and Development Director J. Justin Woods said the ordinance is an extension of the New York State Clean Indoor Air Act. That law prohibits smoking in virtually all workplaces, including restaurants, bars and most other public indoor spaces. When the government raises a tax to levels perceived as punitive, a new criminal enterprise will arise to get around it, and otherwise law-abiding citizens will support the criminals the smoking ban was nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt by a bloated, gluttonous and unaccountable government to raise revenue without raising all of our taxes. It accomplished this goal by demonizing an entire class of adults who, with full knowledge of the consequences, chose to enjoy tobacco products.

CALIFORNIA:
San Francisco is working on a law which would ban pharmacies from selling tobacco products. Loma Linda Council to vote on smoking ban. At its meeting tonight, the City Council may enact a comprehensive outdoor smoking ban. Violators of the proposed ordinance could face a $250 fine for lighting up on streets, sidewalks, private businesses and other places patronized by the public. The proposal also would require 80 percent of the units in apartment complexes to be smoke-free. Students and faculty may be forced to pack away their Camels, Marlboros and Parliaments and leave them at home. A new smoking policy will be voted on Thursday in the Academic Senate to make Chico State a smoke-free campus or only allow smoking in certain areas. "That would be a slap in the face," said sophomore Jessica Scerri-Martin. "I don't need a ban limiting my personal choice."

FLORIDA:
Starting today, Sarasota County's government will implement a tobacco-free hiring policy for all new job applicants. Under this new policy, all applicants for jobs with Sarasota County will be required to acknowledge during the application process that they have not used tobacco products for the preceding 12 months, according to a county press release. Applicants who refuse to verify that they do not use tobacco products will be deemed ineligible for employment. The state of Florida's budget is under pressure. Health care costs are rising, especially the Medicaid program for low-income residents. New sources of income are needed. BOCA RATON -- City officials mentioned today they might expand the city's seven-year-old smoking ban to include beaches.

CANADA:
The Star.com Cigarette display ban to go ahead despite uproar! THE CANADIAN PRESS Ontario smokers will soon have to thumb through a binder to pick the brand of their choice at convenience stores as the province ushers in a ban on cigarette displays which the government says is necessary to save lives despite growing concern among store owners. The new ban prevents all tobacco products from being displayed in any way and prohibits customers from even touching them before they're paid for. The province says store owners have to make sure tobacco products aren't displayed to any potential customer at any time, including during restocking or inventory checks.

FIRES & DEATH DUE TO CIGARETTES:

Cigarette fires have been the top cause of U.S. fire fatalities for decades, killing tens of thousands of people in the past 30 years, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a research group that provides data for state and federal fire codes. Senior citizens suffer disproportionately. They die in cigarette fires at almost four times the rate of other Americans, NFPA research shows. Nationwide, nearly one in 10 fatal building fires begin with a cigarette and end with the death of a senior citizen. Cigarettes are the nation's #1 cause of fire death. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cigarette-caused fires result in more than 1,000 civilian deaths, 3,000 critical injuries (many among firefighters), and $400 million in direct property damage each year.
